Praise for The Wellness Trap
“If the promises and (often unfounded) prescriptions of the wellness industry tend to leave you feeling, well, worse, The Wellness Trap by Christy Harrison, MPH, RD, belongs on your bookshelf. In her second book, Harrison—a journalist, registered dietitian, and certified intuitive eating counselor—tackles diet culture, influencer trends, and the alternative medicine practices that can end up causing more harm than their more conventional counterparts. Turning a critical eye on a multi-trillion-dollar global industry, The Wellness Trap equips readers to navigate tempting promises and claims in a way that will actually leave you feeling seen, heard, and helped.”

“[An] incisive takedown…proposing smart and wide-ranging solutions… The historical perspective elevates Harrison’s analysis, and her empathy for those who fall for disinformation yields illuminating insight (getting into wellness culture, she writes, “starts with feeling disappointed, unheard, or excluded by the Western medical system”). This is an ideal companion for those disillusioned by the medical establishment.”
—Publishers Weekly
“Harrison, a dietician, journalist, and author of Anti-Diet, mounts a persuasive critique of the multitrillion-dollar wellness industry. … Most empathically, she urges us to think critically about the wellness industry’s claims. ‘Wellness culture is a trap,’ she writes, ‘keeping us stuck in a narrow view of what it means to be well and exposing us to much that is harmful—weight stigma, scams, conspiracy theories, damaging approaches to mental health, false diagnoses.’ A sobering, well-informed analysis of widespread deceit.”
—Kirkus Reviews
“Must-read…Weaving together history, memoir, reporting, and practical advice, Harrison leads the way in a radical re-thinking of wellness.”
—Next Big Idea Club
“An insightful, thoughtful resource for finding freedom.”

“Wellness seems like a great goal—who doesn’t want to be well, right? But after reading The Wellness Trap, you’ll see how it is used to distort science and make false promises. With nuance and compassion, Christy deconstructs the history of the idea and shows us how to be well, without being manipulated.”

In The Wellness Trap she continues this vital work, raising incisive questions and helping us to unlearn decades of marketing and pseudoscience and reject a definition of ‘health’ that is both dangerous and impossible to sustain. Harrison’s work is a gift and I am so grateful to have this on my bookshelf.”
